Each year on <a href=\"https:\/\/thelongcenter.org\/communityday\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Community Day<\/a>, we fling the doors open and pull out all the stops to make this FREE community bash one for the ages. Her vision and legacy have inspired countless organizations, educational programs, arts &amp; cultural initiatives, and individuals over the years. Thanks to Terry and her husband <strong>Joe R. So, while we calabrate another year of serving the Austin arts scene, we\u2019re also looking at how the Long Center can expand what we do and innovate on what we\u2019ve done, inspired by Terry\u2019s passion and devotion.\u00a0<\/p><p>From traditional performing arts to hyper-local creativity, we\u2019re looking to a horizon that\u2019s always sunny and has room for everyone. Who wouldn\u2019t want to celebrate that??<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d6dff63 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"d6dff63\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-2246a19 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"2246a19\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h5><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><strong>The Skinny on Teresa Lozano Long<\/strong><\/span><\/h5><h6><span style=\"color: #008080;\"><strong>A Strong, Smart, Texas Woman<\/strong><\/span><\/h6><p>Growing up on her parents\u2019 dairy farm in South Texas, Terry was valedictorian of her high school class at the age of 16. She went on to get her Bachelor\u2019s, Master\u2019s, and doctoral degrees from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.utexas.edu\/\">UT Austin<\/a>, becoming the first Hispanic woman to earn a doctorate in health and physical education from the University (wow).<\/p><p>She was inducted into the <a href=\"https:\/\/gov.texas.gov\/organization\/women\/women-hof\">Texas Women\u2019s Hall of Fame<\/a> in 2010, and as an organization with an all-female trio of Board Officers and a mostly-female executive leadership team, we think it\u2019s pretty cool that her name is on the building.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d54cd04 elementor-widget elementor-widget-image\" data-id=\"d54cd04\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"image.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<figure class=\"wp-caption\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/thelongcenter.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/IMG_0409-300x300.jpeg\" class=\"attachment-medium size-medium wp-image-4999\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thelongcenter.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/IMG_0409-300x300.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/thelongcenter.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/IMG_0409-150x150.jpeg 150w, https:\/\/thelongcenter.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/IMG_0409.jpeg 480w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<figcaption class=\"widget-image-caption wp-caption-text\">Photo courtesy the Long family.<\/figcaption>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/figure>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-1b9ff72 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"1b9ff72\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d84ec01 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"d84ec01\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h6><span style=\"color: #008080;\"><strong>National and Local Advocate<\/strong><\/span><\/h6><p>Chances are, if it\u2019s an arts org in Austin, Terry probably supported it. Not only was she appointed to the National Council advising the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arts.gov\/\">National Endowment for the Arts<\/a> in 2002 (that\u2019s like the biggest federal support that the arts can get), but she also tirelessly advocated nationally and locally for cultural institutions and initiatives of all types.<\/p><p>Giving the lead gift that built and established the Long Center for the Performing Arts, together with her husband, Terry championed so many organizations throughout the community, a few of which will be participating in Community Day. Look out for performances by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.austinsoundwaves.org\/\">Austin Soundwaves<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/austinclassicalguitar.org\/\">Austin Classical Guitar<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/balletaustin.org\/\">Ballet Austin<\/a>\u2019s Rhythm on Stage, musicians from <a href=\"https:\/\/austinsymphony.org\/\">Austin Symphony Orchestra<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/austinopera.org\/\">Austin Opera<\/a>.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d700c20 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"d700c20\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-0e2bc51 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"0e2bc51\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h6><span style=\"color: #008080;\"><strong>Arts and Education for All <\/strong><\/span><\/h6><p>There can\u2019t be a mention of Dr. Long without highlighting her humanity. Her special combination of positivity, dedication to giving back, and strong belief in the idea that everyone deserves access to arts and education made her a pioneer in the field of philanthropy.
